McKeithen Growers, Inc.

I was thinking, as I was writing about IBE Barter Member McKeithen Growers, just how many species of native trees there are, and I realized I don’t know a thing about the subject but as I read about the various choices and expert evaluation by Eddie McKeithen, I became fascinated.  McKeithen Growers is a family business that has been thriving since 1995. They do a bit of mail order business as well, and are hands-on when it comes to caring for their customers and answering all your questions. They will give you all the necessary information about how to treat your purchase so it will outlive you!

McKeithen’s supplies Native trees but will also introduce you to a few species that are not typical to Florida, but have done quite well.  Eddie McKeithen is the owner, and is a graduate of the University of the South, Sewanee, TN, with a BS degree in Forestry and Natural Resources. Eddie is a native Floridian and has been involved in the landscape and horticulture industry in Florida since 1984.McKeithen Growers is located in East Manatee County, approx. 10 miles east of I-75 just off of State Road 70, and are members of FANN and FNGLA agencies, two Florida horticultural Associations.

McKeithen Grower’s, Inc. is a premier supplier of native trees indigenous to Florida, the Eastern US Seaboard north to Maryland, and the Gulf Coast States west to Texas. They offer 40 plus varieties of landscape quality native trees in containers including 3, 15, 30, 45, 100 & 200 gal. sizes.  Every year McKeithen’s offers more varieties of natives to choose from. But they don’t just grow native trees.  Take a look around and see trees that you don’t everyday!

The McKeithen Growers website is a place to go for information and suggestions on where trees will do the best and be robust.  There’s a beautiful array of photos that capture the true beauty of some of these varieties, and if you click on each picture you will get a complete list of information with pictures, describing that particular tree, how much sunlight it needs, what height and spread it will grow to, colors to expect upon bloom, and the attributes and features. Not only can you access the website for information, but if you call the nursery, an employee or family member will be happy to give you the complete story on your tree.

On the McKeithen Growers website you will see some native trees that are strongly suggested by Eddie because of their ability to adapt to the Florida weather. The Standard S. Red Cedar is perfect for everyday landscapes as is the American Elm. These have been sheared for maximum fullness, so as they grow into a larger tree they will have a much wider canopy.

The following trees are also currently available in 100 gal. containers at McKeithen Growers:  Red Maple, Southern Red Cedar (full to the base), Native Southern Magnolia, Live Oak and Bald Cypress.  They also carry Sweetbay Magnolias, Slash Pine, Pond Cypress, Winged Elm, Dahoon Holly, and Sweetgum.  Available in 30 gallon sizes are water oaks, popash, and pignut hickory.

During their season, the following trees will be ready in various sizes:  Chickasaw Plum, Redbud, Loblolly Bay, Blackgum (Swamp Tupelo), Cherry Laurel and Needle Palm.

Log onto: www.mckeithengrowers.com for a wonderful idea of what you can plant on your own property, how much sunlight you need, specifications about soil, and many beautiful pictures about Florida native trees.  Eddie McKeithen is the owner, and the Growers are located at 24005 71st Ave. East, in Myakka City, Fl.  34251. A’tu, A Women’s Jewelry And Clothing Boutique

A’TU International Jewelry and Clothing was started over 25 years ago on a lanai in Sarasota, Florida.  They began their business doing parties at people’s homes and became such a quick success that they were selling their jewelry to boutiques and small chain department stores.  Being left with stock at the end of each season, they decided to open their Jewelry and Clothing Outlet, featuring hand-picked current styles at reduced prices.  As a member of IBE, the International Barter Exchange, all members are welcome to shop at A’TU!

Their philosophy is to provide great products at discounted prices. They know you’ll be getting lots of compliments from your friends and will bring them with you next time you shop. I was pleasantly surprised to find that all of the clothing was washable!  The designs they carry are styles you won’t see coming and going.  Some styles are Bohemian, some smartly dressy, and then your every day wardrobe basics: the black and white blazers and jackets, the standard dress pants, shells, and jewelry to match. You’ll find tops, pants, basics, jackets, jewelry, totes, and racks of sale items that will really give your dollars a lot more mileage.

El Warike Peruvian Cuisine

El Warike offers one of the best Peruvian Cuisines on the Gulf Coast of Florida. You can enjoy this wonderful dining experience in a cozy and inviting atmosphere. For over ten years their trained staff and talented chefs have dedicated themselves to providing you with a fun, relaxing, and delicious time. Their selection of Peruvian dishes includes traditional dishes, Cerviches, Peruvian Paellas and the traditional grilled specialties.

If you’ve never had Peruvian cuisine you are missing an amazing cuisine that has evolved from both local and immigrant traditions. The foods eaten today in Peruvian cuisine are the same recipes from ancient civilizations. Peruvian dishes have also inherited some of its roots from European, African and Asian influences. The country of Peru and its geography bring into play local seafood from the coast, tropical fruits from the jungle and grains and potatoes from the Andes.

Peruvian cuisine reflects local practices and ingredients—including influences from the indigenous Inca and cuisines brought in with immigrants such as Spanish cuisine, Chinese cuisine, Italian cuisine, German cuisine, Japanese cuisine and African influences. Without the familiar ingredients from their home countries, immigrants modified their traditional cuisines by using ingredients available in Peru. The three traditional staples of Peruvian cuisine are corn, potatoes, and chili peppers. Staples brought by the Spanish include rice, wheat and meats (beef, pork and chicken). Many traditional foods—such as quinoa, kaniwa, some varieties of chili peppers, and several roots and tubers have increased in popularity in recent decades, reflecting a revival of interest in native Peruvian foods and culinary techniques.

Jorge Corzo, owner and chef, migrated to the US 11 years ago with a dream of sharing the jewels of Peruvian Cuisine with Americans. The family has opened several restaurants since they have been in the US, such as El Tondero, Red, Peruvian Grill and El Warike. El Warike offers the best and most authentic Peruvian food and was the first Peruvian restaurant in Bradenton!

Peruvian cuisine is considered the best South American Cuisine and you can find that out by eating at El Warike! Serving Lunch and Dinner, you can also see daily specials on their website, www.elwarikerestaurant.com. Menus can also be viewed, as well as wine selections. Ortygia Restaurant

Meet Ortygia Restaurant and Chef Gaetano Cannata.  When people grow up cooking and eating their favorite cuisine, you know you’re getting a piece of their family history and the history of their native country, in this case, Sicily, Italy.  Chef Guy’s cuisine is the result of living in a tight-knit neighborhood in New Jersey and watching his father create elaborate meals for friends and family.  Their home was a gathering place of friends and relatives, and Guy strived to recreate that atmosphere at Ortygia Restaurant in Bradenton.

Chef Guy decided to move to Florida and work in various restaurants to accumulate knowledge of other cuisines and fine tune his own culinary talents.  Seeing the laid-back atmosphere of Bradenton’s Village of the Arts, he converted a cottage into a charming and atmospheric restaurant, his Ortygia.  This is the sweet atmosphere and meeting place for eating and hanging out where he serves up “Monzu” cuisine, a mixture of Sicilian and French cooking that actually dates back to Napolean’s time.

In fact, Chef Gaetano’s style of culinary arts incorporates elements of Arab, Greek, Spanish and North African cooking styles that have historic roots.

The ingredients in Chef Gaetano’s food embrace organic and locally purchased products in an effort to buy local.  Mazzone Extra Virgin Olive Oil is exclusively used in all preparations.  Did you know you can cater your party or business meeting through Ortygia?  Indoor and outdoor space is available with the perfect ambiance.  And there are some very special retail products available for your home use.  Just inquire within.  This restaurant offers a friendly family atmosphere and you’ll find the patrons to be discerning about flavors and knowing exactly what they want.  Log onto: www.ortygiarestaurant.com  to see the menu and many more interesting facts or call 941-741-8646 for reservations and remember, Ortygia is open from Tuesday through Sunday to serve you.  Lunch is served between 11:30 am to 2:30 am.  Dinner is from 5:00 pm to 9:30 pm.

Chef Gaetano hosts cooking tours of the Mediterranean that you will want to sign up for. Learn about the cuisine sand see the gorgeous countryside of different regions of the Mediterranean as you have hands-on cooking lessons and tours and meals in the better area bistros and cafes. Look for the tab on the website to sign up or simply read and learn about how exciting these tours are, with pictures and comments from patrons.

My friend Sande Caplin, who is always searching out restaurants and taking friends along to enjoy the ride, gave me an excellent recommendation for Ortygia.  Sande is an IBE member and was very impressed with the unique cuisine at Chef Guy’s wonderful restaurant.  In fact, Sande said that Chef stopped at his table to asked how everything was and answered all the questions about the origin of some of the dishes and was generous of his time.  All around it was a delicious experience for Sande and his friends.  IBE Barter is proud to have Ortygia as a member and to refer people there for a special, one-of-a-kind meal!  Chef Guy welcomes you!

For some it’s a giant step to be willing to talk to someone who wants to listen.  To seek relief, education and compassion is a big and important beginning towards starting the healing process.  Sometimes its old childhood problems such as sexual or physical abuse, abandonment or neglect, that have shaped your life, and you need someone to listen to you and a place to feel safe.  Many aspects from your past that you have suppressed may make you feel like a walking time bomb and feel like you’re waiting to explode.

Patricia Musselwhite-Weaver is a Sarasota mental health counselor who offers counseling and education to clients whether they are children, adults, elderly or disabled.  She is licensed to do psychotherapy for depression, grief, anxiety, stress reduction, anger management, and relaxation therapy.  Patricia is experienced in helping clients adjust to their physical disabilities or chronic illnesses and provide pain management.  Patricia is an expert at helping her disabled clients apply for resources and especially for Social Security Disability benefits.

Patricia was born and raised in Minnesota where she completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Minnesota.  She then lived in Mexico for 5 years and is fluent in Spanish.  She moved to Sarasota in 1980 and completed her Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of South Florida.  Her master’s research thesis was “Female Victim’s Perception of Relationship Between Spouse Abuse and Alcohol Use.”  She` ran a safe house for adult victims of childhood abuse and has worked with ex-inmates from prison.

Patricia has seen and heard most everything from her clients, so don’t think anything you tell her will be shocking.  In providing a safe place to let go of fears and really talk about what has happened in the past and what will happen now is a gift you will experience under the guidance of Patricia Musslewhite-Weaver.  Anything you tell her is held in the strictest of confidence.

Patricia is married with grown children and two grandchildren.  Her original life plan was to become a veterinarian but in her day, discrimination against women was allowed.  Friends later dared her to enter graduate school in Mexico and she took a year of psychology classes.  People in her life kept pointing her in the direction of counseling and she followed that path.  It seems like a perfect fit, as she has been in practice and helping people for over 30 years and she loves her career.

Her office is located at 7012C South Tamiami Trail in the Pine Park Centre, south of Gulf Gate Pavillion on Highway 41, across from the Mazda dealer.  Please call her at 941-922-6404 to schedule an appointment.  The direction of your life can be changed by entrusting your care to Patricia-Musselwhite-Weaver, an important member of the International Barter Exchange.

This relatively unspoiled terrain serves as the back drop for golf in a northern setting.

Designed to challenge golfers at all levels, the course caters to the most exacting golfer as well as forgives those with higher handicaps. Bent Tree has something to offer everyone. Then there is the ever dangerous 511 yard par five 18th which features a double dogleg with water left, right and in the middle to a three tiered green. The back nine is considered by all to be the toughest part of the course.  US Open Qualifiers have been hosted at Bent Tree in the past and the Florida State High School Championship was played at Bent Tree in 1998 and 1999.
